Online auctions are great. I like the fact that you know exactly how many items you have won and can arrange for pick up with the size and quantity in mind.
Out of town/area online auctions are a little different and you should bid accordingly:
1. Check to see if online auctions offer shipping and if it is a flat quote or varies based on your location.
2. Find out if there are discounts for combining lots and shipping them together. If you are interested in more than 1 lot, try to get a combined shipping quote in advance.
3. Out of state sellers may not charge sales tax if they do not have an outlet in your state. If your purchase is not subject to sales tax, it may represent significant savings and help offset any shipping costs.
4. For large online auction sites, bid on the items you are interested in. If you win and the seller offers combined shipping savings, I always check the seller's other online listings or store items and purchase them before requesting an invoice.
5. Pay attention to previous sales information, feedback ratings and seller location when bidding. If an item has to be shipped from Arizona or Hong Kong, keep the transit time in mind while bidding.
